1. Uniforms help kids feel connected to a learning community.
You’ve probably noticed how much your little one loves to dress up. Most parents have seen a Halloween costume that transitioned into everyday wear or a favorite sweater or dress that serves as a comfort object for their child. Costume and outfit changes are a way for kids to express their creativity, showcase their imaginations, and try on different identities and roles. By providing them with an outfit for school, they’ll equate putting on those clothes with learning, playing, friendship, and growing.
In the same way adults change into different clothes for work and play, having a uniform set of clothing for preschool can help a child feel connected to their teachers and their classmates. Changing into their school uniform can also help them mentally and emotionally transition from home to school.

2. Uniforms help preschoolers build independence.
Kids are proud to wear clothes that connect them to a particular activity or place. They may dress up for church or holiday celebrations, or they put on tennis shoes and shorts for a fun day at the park. Having a special outfit for school can empower kids to prepare and dress themselves, helping them feel independent and confident before they leave for preschool.

3. Preschool uniforms help keep families organized.
Busy families have a lot of things to keep track of. Sippy cups, snacks, diapers, mittens, and tiny pairs of shoes and socks. With a preschool uniform, parents spend less time searching for matching outfits and more time reading books and playing with toys. Time is especially precious in the morning, when parents and kids are preparing to depart for the day. Uniforms make the morning routine easier, so parents can focus on feeding and connecting with their children before school drop-off.
Uniforms can also be used as a teaching tool for kids by involving them in preparing their outfits for the week. Practice number skills by having your child count out the five uniform shirts they’ll need that week. Or, help them learn about the calendar by placing sticky notes with the day of the week on each of the five outfits.
4. Cultivating Confidence and Independence.
Sunnyside Academy uses school uniforms to help kids feel connected and to encourage their independence. By creating a warm and welcoming school environment, we help kids focus on what’s on the inside. With a myriad of on-site enrichment activities, flexible curriculums, and plenty of time for imaginative play, kids can exercise creativity and exploration.
